Preventing backscatter failed deliveries for error 553 5.7.1

If I spoof an email from an unauthorized mail server (for testing purposes) the legitimate user will get a failed delivery report:

victim@legitdomain.com
x.x.x.x #<x.x.x.x #5.7.1 smtp; 553 5.7.1 <victim@legitdomain.com>: Sender address rejected: not logged in> #SMTP#

I'm trying to prevent these from happening to our users (currently one users gets these backscatter emails on a daily basis). I have tried adding "reject_authenticated_sender_login_mismatch" and "reject_unauthenticated_sender_login_mismatch" to smtpd_recipient_restrictions in /etc/postfix/main.cf but it had no affect.

I have read this: http://www.postfix.org/BACKSCATTER_README.html#real but would like to know if there is a simple configuration that can be changed to stop the failed deliveries from being sent out since that type of error will likely be spoofed spam.

Thanks for any help!

Luke

Hi

I wonder if it somehow is possible to "tighten" security regarding incoming SPAM - so that messages without SPF or DKIM either automatically is considered SPAM, or it maybe even is possibel to reject messages from servers/organisations without valid SPF/DKIM setup ?

Hi all,

I am here to ask for some help figuring out a solution to my problem. For a particular mailbox (only one), the sender sending email to it reports receiving messages that the mailbox is full. This mailbox is on iredmail 0.8.7 server.

At first, the notification was true because the mailbox had a total of 1.1GB. After that emails were deleted to bring the size done to approx 850MB.

Also, I was asked to look into the quota settings and I raised both postfix and dovecot quota to 5GB. Restarted both postfix and dovecot after that. Still haven't restarted the server though.

Right now the mailbox is around 869MB in size. Using the roundcube webmail it clearly says only 17% full. But senders again report receiving the notification that the destination mailbox is full.

The users are in AD set up on another ubuntu server with samba4 AD. Using iredmail documentation the mail server was integrated with AD for the user base.

I can provide any details you need to help out. Please let me know. I really need to make this notification go away and I don't understand where it comes from.

Thanks.
Darko.

At this moment going to example.de is redirected to roundcube, but i want there an other page, so only mail.example would go to roundcube.

Hi Zhang,

New feature request for open source iRedAdmin,

Aliases and forwarding.

I believe that more people will use the open source version and therefore upgrade to Pro if the user aliases feature, stripped down to the basic one alias to multiple people, not selectable by the users edit screen, no moderator and such.

and user mailbox forwarding seems like it should be a real basic function.

My opinion in getting companies to use the product. I can't use the basic product and must upgrade to Pro with will not fly with many startups.

Hello,

I have two problems with fail2ban :

  • A mail server with my company works a lot is still banned (verified by using iptables-save). I liked to "whitelist" the server IP address and to do so, I added IP address in /etc/fail2ban/jail.conf in "ignoreip". Restarted the server and IP is still banned after minutes. What missed I ?

  • /var/log/fail2ban.log is empty (and rotated logs too). I don't modify anything except the ignoreip variable. I have "logtarget = FILE /var/log/fail2ban.log" in /etc/fail2ban/fail2ban.conf. What missed I ?

Thanks in advance

Hey all,

At our company we've setup an iredmail server with iredadmin pro.
We of course need similar functions as our last mail server.

so my question to all is are there any active extentions for global/shared calendar and address book also active-sync of some sort for MYSQL?

I've found a few but most are outdated and/or don't have the deb source anymore and are for LDAP only.

any sugestions on working builds are welcome smile

I use Ubuntu 14.04 with iRedMail 0.9.2.

There is something really strange. After i change the DNS records of all my domains and they refreshed successfully i can not receive emails any more.

I have several domains all pointing to same IP address. I have no problems with sendind/receiving emails before the DNS change.

The more strange thing is that i can send emails from all my domains but i can receive emails only on my main domain.

Example:

office@maindomain.com - Can receive and send.
office@seconddomain.com - Can send but not receive.
office@thirddomain.com - Can send but not receive.

In other hand i can send and receive emails inside all my domains, but if i try to send emails from gmail for example i can receive the email only on my main domain.

Here is my mail.log file:
